Indonesia to launch Sustainable Aviation Fuel on 1% of international flights by 2027

The Indonesian government announced that Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) will be introduced for about 1 % of international flights departing from Soekarno‑Hatta (Jakarta) and I Gusti Ngurah Rai (Bali) airports starting in 2027. Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) said the step is part of a broader low‑emission transformation of air transport, noting, “Jadi ini tahun 2027 semangatnya adalah kita menggunakan Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), artinya ini sebagai alternatif dari avtur konvensional dan ini jauh lebih bersih.”

SAF can be blended with conventional jet fuel and will be produced domestically from sources such as waste oil, agricultural residues and biomass. The policy aims to cut aviation‑related emissions, reduce exposure to volatile global fuel prices, and develop a complete local supply chain from feedstock to final fuel. The government plans to expand SAF use gradually to more routes after the initial rollout.
