Indonesia urges husbands to increase involvement in family planning

The Indonesian Ministry of Population and Family Development is calling for husbands to take a more active role in family planning and reproductive health to foster healthier families.

Deputy Wahidin noted a significant disparity in contraceptive use, stating that men accounted for approximately 3.3 percent of modern contraceptive users in the 2025 Family Data Update, while women accounted for over 96 percent. To address this, the ministry is promoting shared decision-making and increasing public literacy regarding male contraceptive methods.

The ministry is also expanding the ‘Kelas Ayah Idaman’ (Ideal Father Class) initiative, a program designed to encourage husbands to participate in choosing family planning methods. This program is being expanded to 1,000 independent midwife clinics across the country this year.
