Indonesia family planning and youth development initiatives

Indonesia’s Ministry of Population and Family Development has focused on enhancing family quality through improved postpartum family planning and expanded public services.

Minister Wihaji initially emphasized that postpartum family planning should be treated as a vital investment in child development, focusing on birth spacing to ensure optimal nutrition and parenting. To support this, the government planned to introduce innovations and draft a Ministerial Regulation to strengthen legal frameworks and administrative data.

To commemorate World Contraception Day, the Ministry launched free family planning services nationwide from September 7 to October 7, 2026. These services, available at registered health facilities, include counseling, screening, examinations, and the installation of Long-Term Contraceptive Methods (MKJP) such as IUDs and implants. Deputy Minister Ratu Ayu Isyana Bagoes Oka recently inspected the implementation of these services in South Tangerang. The initiative aims to promote pregnancy spacing to prevent risks associated with being “too young, too old, too frequent, or having too many children.”

Addressing gender disparities in reproductive health, Deputy Wahidin noted that men accounted for approximately 3.3 percent of modern contraceptive users in the 2025 Family Data Update, compared to over 96 percent for women. To encourage male involvement, the Ministry is expanding the ‘Kelas Ayah Idaman’ (Ideal Father Class) initiative to 1,000 independent midwife clinics nationwide this year, promoting shared decision-making and male contraceptive literacy.

Additionally, the Ministry expanded its scope to youth development by establishing Youth Information and Counseling Centers (PIK-R). In collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs, this program provides peer counseling and educational spaces in schools to support adolescent development and mental well-being.
