BMKG issues weather alerts for strong winds, haze, and high waves across Indonesia

The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued several weather warnings across the archipelago for mid-September 2026.

In East Java, strong winds reaching up to 48 km/h are expected due to pressure differences between eastern Australia and the equator. This phenomenon is predicted to affect numerous regencies, including Malang, Surabaya, and Banyuwangi, through at least September 15. Residents are advised to avoid standing under trees or billboards and to be cautious when driving on bridges or highways.

In Papua, BMKG Timika warned of moderate winds caused by cumulonimbus clouds, while Merauke reported transboundary haze moving from Papua New Guinea into South Papua, potentially reducing air quality and visibility. Additionally, high waves between 1.25 and 2.5 meters are forecasted for the waters of Baubau and Wakatobi in Southeast Sulawesi, posing risks to small fishing vessels.

Nationwide, much of Indonesia is expected to experience cloudy to partly cloudy conditions. However, western regions including Aceh, North Sumatra, and Riau may face moderate to heavy rain. While a tropical cyclone seed (98W) was detected near Cambodia, BMKG stated it has a low probability of development and will not significantly impact Indonesia.
