Weather variability and haze in Indonesia

Overview

Weather conditions across Indonesia continue to show significant variability driven by multiple atmospheric phenomena. In late August, the influence of a very strong El Nino has driven dry conditions in South Sulawesi, contributing to a rise in forest and land fires (karhutla). Between January and August 2026, 112 incidents were recorded in South Sulawesi alone, affecting over 1,600 hectares.

Simultaneously, Tropical Cyclone Nara in the western South China Sea has been identified as a driver for potential heavy rain, thunderstorms, and increased cloud growth across parts of Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Papua. In the Maluku region, BMKG has issued warnings for high waves reaching 1.25 to 2.5 meters in 14 to 16 maritime areas.

Recent BMKG forecasts indicate that atmospheric convergence and confluence are expected to trigger rain in several major cities. Moderate rain is possible in Nabire, while light rain is forecasted for Medan, Jambi, Bengkulu, Tanjung Selor, Mamuju, Palu, Jayapura, Jayawijaya, and Merauke.

Visibility concerns have emerged, as areas including Bandar Lampung, Pontianak, and Manokwari may experience smoke or haze. Reduced visibility is also expected in Pekanbaru, Padang, Palembang, Palangkaraya, Banjarmasin, and Ternate. In Riau, rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds remains a threat for Siak, Kampar, and Pekanbaru. Central Java continues to face risks of forest fires and tidal flooding (rob) on the northern coast, despite forecasts of light rain in seven mountainous regions.
