Indonesia weather alerts issued for floods, landslides, and El Nino impacts
Indonesia is facing diverse weather challenges as the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issues warnings for various regions. The country is navigating the impacts of El Nino, which is predicted to persist until early 2027, potentially delaying the rainy season and increasing risks of drought and forest fires.
In Aceh, recent extreme weather has triggered flash floods and landslides in Gayo Lues and Aceh Tenggara, causing infrastructure damage and cutting off road access. However, recovery efforts are underway in Gayo Lues, where land optimization programs are helping farmers restore productivity in areas previously damaged by mud and floods.
Nationwide, BMKG has warned of potential cumulonimbus cloud growth in Sumatra and Papua, which could lead to high-intensity local rainfall. Other regions, including parts of Java, Riau, and West Sumatra, are also under alert for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds. Authorities are advising citizens to remain vigilant against hydrometeorological disasters such as flooding, landslides, and river overflows.
