Indonesia widens free meals program for pesantren after illness

Indonesia’s free nutritious meals programme, Program Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG), is being rolled out by the Ministry of Religious Affairs together with the National Nutrition Agency (BGN). The minister, Nazaruddin Umar, said only about one percent of pesantren have been served so far and that cooperation will be strengthened to expand coverage and improve beneficiary data.

At Al Ashriyyah Nurul Iman Islamic Boarding School in Bogor, the MBG scheme is integrated with a self‑sufficient food supply chain that includes the school’s own rice, tofu, tempeh, vegetable gardens and other farms. The boarding school provides meals such as beef teriyaki, chicken yakiniku, lychee and grapes to roughly 7,000 students.

In Kediri, health officials reported that about 201 students from three schools experienced nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea and dizziness after eating MBG meals on 24 July. Only one student required hospitalisation. The Kediri Health Department, led by Achmad Khati, has opened an investigation and said distribution could be temporarily suspended while the cause is determined.
