Indonesia respiratory infections surge amid widespread wildfires
Indonesia is facing a significant public health crisis as forest and peatland fires have caused a surge in acute respiratory infections (ARI). Between August 18 and September 21, the Indonesian Health Ministry recorded approximately 175,000 ARI cases across 63 districts in six provinces, with more than 40,000 cases affecting children under five.
The fires, intensified by drought, have exposed over 12.5 million people to hazardous smoke. The resulting haze has crossed international borders, impacting air quality in Malaysia and Singapore. In Malaysia, the Ministry of Health reported a sharp increase in asthma and conjunctivitis cases, while ASEAN activated a Level 3 transboundary haze alert.
In response to the wildfires, Indonesia has deployed 64 aircraft and over 54,000 personnel. Japan is also providing international assistance, deploying three CH-47 Chinook helicopters and approximately 180 military personnel to support water-bombing operations in Kalimantan.
Medical experts, including the Indonesian Pediatric Society (IDAI), have warned that the fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the smoke is particularly dangerous for children, as it can penetrate deep into the respiratory system and enter the bloodstream.
