Indonesian authorities crack down on civil servant absenteeism

Local authorities in Indonesia are intensifying efforts to enforce discipline among civil servants (ASN) regarding working hours and mandatory attendance.

In Tangerang, Deputy Mayor Maryono Hasan conducted a surprise inspection during a joint morning assembly. He discovered several employees failing to join their respective departmental lines. During the inspection, he reprimanded staff members for being absent from the assembly and reminded them of the importance of punctuality and professional conduct.

In Bekasi, the municipal public order agency (Satpol PP) reported frequent instances of civil servants being found at malls, cafes, and markets during working hours. Head of Satpol PP Nesan Sujana noted that while many violators are from the Bekasi City government, a significant number also belong to the neighboring Bekasi Regency.

The agency has implemented a disciplinary protocol where civil servants receive recorded warnings, with sanctions applied after a third offense. However, stricter measures apply to honorary workers and Government Employees with Work Agreements (PPPK), who face immediate warnings or dismissal for skipping work hours. Satpol PP plans to conduct raids twice a week to maintain discipline.
