Indonesia prepares transportation safety for 2026/2027 holiday season
Indonesian authorities are intensifying preparations to ensure safe transportation during the 2026 Christmas and 2027 New Year (Nataru) holiday period. The Indonesian National Police Traffic Corps (Korlantas) and the Ministry of Transportation are coordinating cross-sectoral efforts to manage increased mobility and prevent accidents.
Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi has directed all operators to prepare operational plans addressing passenger surges, capacity management, and emergency procedures. Key safety measures include intensive ramp checks for buses and trucks to ensure vehicle roadworthiness. The Ministry also emphasized the importance of crew health and competence, noting that human factors, such as driver fatigue, contribute to approximately 70% of accidents.
Korlantas Head Aries Syahbudin highlighted the importance of the Lilin Operation, which involves preemptive and preventive measures beyond simple traffic management. Authorities are also working to finalize regulations regarding the restriction of three-axle freight vehicles to minimize logistical disruptions and potential friction during the holiday period.
