Indonesia ferry fire kills five, leaves 41 missing
On 2 August 2026 a passenger ferry, KM Mutiara Sentosa 2, caught fire off Madura Island in the Java Sea while sailing from Surabaya to Makassar. The blaze killed at least five people and left 41 still missing. Rescue agencies, including the navy, police and the National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas), deployed boats, a corvette and a helicopter, eventually evacuating more than 230 survivors and accounting for all passengers listed on the manifest.
The vessel was reported to be carrying about 271 people, though the exact number remains uncertain. The cause of the fire has not been determined and the Ministry of Transportation has opened an investigation. Pertamina’s oil‑products tanker MT Transko Arafura rescued 17 survivors, and a disaster‑victim identification team is processing the five bodies recovered. Government officials, including Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi and DPR speaker Puan Maharani, pledged support and the protection of victims’ rights.
