Indonesian poultry farmers protest falling egg prices

Poultry farmers in Indonesia are staging protests across different regions to voice grievances over plummeting egg prices and soaring animal feed costs.

In Kendal, farmers released and distributed 15,000 chickens at the town square as a symbolic protest. The Kendal Poultry Farmers Cooperative is demanding lower feed prices, higher egg prices, an end to raw material import monopolies, and the establishment of a dedicated ministry of livestock. The Regent of Kendal expressed support for the farmers and pledged to convey their aspirations to the central government.

Similarly, in Makassar, South Sulawesi, farmers held demonstrations in front of the Governor's office. They distributed free eggs and live chickens to the public to highlight their economic struggle. Farmers reported that egg prices have dropped to between Rp20,000 and Rp21,000 per kilogram, significantly below the government-set reference price of Rp26,500 per kilogram. They are calling on both provincial and central governments to intervene to prevent widespread bankruptcy in the small-scale poultry sector.
