Indonesian regions declare emergency alerts for drought and forest fires

Local governments in Indonesia have declared emergency alert statuses due to increasing drought and forest and land fire (karhutla) risks.

In Pati, the regional government has established a disaster alert status for drought and forest fires effective from August 1 to October 30, 2026. The move aims to mitigate expanding drought conditions affecting villages and agricultural land. Currently, several villages have requested clean water assistance, and approximately 45 hectares of farmland have been impacted, with the affected area growing into hundreds of hectares in the Jaken and Jakenan districts. Authorities have advised farmers to switch to secondary crops that require less water.

In Kuantan Singingi, Riau, the regional government has declared an emergency alert status specifically addressing the impact of haze caused by forest and land fires. The declaration follows concerns regarding environmental conditions and public health. Officials have instructed technical departments to coordinate responses, with the BPBD tasked with managing the situation and the Health Office ensuring readiness for respiratory issues. Residents have been advised to limit outdoor activities and use masks, particularly vulnerable groups like children and the elderly.
