Indonesian religious groups focus on ethical AI integration

Religious organizations in Indonesia are addressing the rise of artificial intelligence by focusing on ethical implementation and verified knowledge. The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) in East Java is developing ‘AI Mu’awin’, an agentic AI assistant designed to provide access to curated Islamic fatwas and Wasathiyah Islam principles. Developed in collaboration with the AI Centre at Universitas Brawijaya, the tool aims to mitigate the risk of AI hallucinations and ensure users receive accountable religious information without replacing human religious authorities.

Simultaneously, Muhammadiyah leadership is encouraging its members, particularly the youth, to master modern technologies like AI as part of the ‘Islam Berkemajuan’ spirit. Leaders emphasized that technological proficiency must be paired with strong ethics and moral foundations to prevent the misuse of information and ensure that AI is used for the broader benefit of society rather than self-interest.
