Indonesia's BAZNAS expands Zakat oversight, awards compliance to firms and boosts local leadership

The Makassar municipal government confirmed that the selection of five BAZNAS city leaders for the 2026‑2031 term was conducted openly and objectively, with final approval by BAZNAS RI. “Alhamdulillah, seluruh proses seleksi telah berjalan sesuai mekanisme,” said Mohammad Syarief of the city administration.

BAZNAS RI, in partnership with the Dewan Syariah Nasional of the MUI, presented a Zakat Compliance Award to 56 sharia‑compliant companies. Chair Sodik Mudjahid emphasized that true sharia compliance must have tangible social impact, stating, “Kepatuhan syariah yang sejati harus berdampak… pada turunnya angka kemiskinan, terbukanya lapangan pekerjaan, pemberdayaan mustahik menjadi muzaki.” The award aims to encourage firms to channel zakat through official amils, funding scholarships, UMKM capital, health clinics and stunting‑reduction programs.

In Kaur Regency, BAZNAS RI’s regional director Saidah Sakwan highlighted a potential zakat fund of Rp71 billion and called for stronger local regulations. “Potensi zakat di Kabupaten Kaur secara keseluruhan diperkirakan mencapai Rp71 miliar,” she said, urging the DPRD to support zakat‑related policies and allocations.
