Baznas expands scholarships, free health aid and productive zakat push in Indonesia

The National Zakat Agency (Baznas) in Indonesia announced several new initiatives. In Padang, Baznas opened enrollment for a scholarship program covering tuition and related costs for up to eight semesters for academically‑eligible students from low‑income families, with additional character‑building activities.

In Central Sulawesi’s Parigi Moutong district, Baznas partnered with the local health office to provide free medical examinations and treatment to 171 earthquake‑affected residents, focusing on seniors and patients with chronic conditions.

Separately, Baznas senior official Syarifuddin emphasized the importance of strengthening productive zakat as a tool to safeguard household purchasing power and support the real‑sector economy amid a global crisis. The agency is pursuing digitalisation and broader economic‑Islamic reforms to enhance resilience.
