Indonesia's BMKG issues high‑wave warnings for West Sumatra and South Kalimantan

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued an early‑warning for high sea waves in West Sumatra’s coastal waters from 14 June 2026 19:00 WIB until 17 June 2026 19:00 WIB. Wave heights are expected to reach 2.5‑4 metres, with winds from the west to northwest at 4‑30 knots. The alert covers the Padang‑Pariaman, Agam‑Pasaman Barat, Pesisir Selatan, and several islands in the Mentawai chain. BMKG warned that ferries become hazardous at wind speeds of 21 knots and wave heights of 2.5 metres, while smaller fishing boats and barges face risks at lower thresholds.

A separate warning began on 16 June 2026 for the waters of South Kalimantan (Kalsel). Waves up to 2.5 metres are forecast for the Kotabaru area, with wind from the southwest at 10‑13 knots. Adjacent zones around Banjarmasin, Tanah Laut and Tanah Bumbu are expected to see calmer conditions (0.5‑1.25 metres). BMKG urged fishermen, tug operators and ferry services to stay vigilant, especially when transiting Kotabaru, and warned of broader hydrometeorological hazards such as flooding, landslides and slippery roads on the mainland.
