Indonesia hit by floods in Manado and Luwu Utara as BMKG warns of coastal flooding and 4‑meter waves

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) reported that severe floods in Manado, North Sulawesi, forced 747 people from 215 families to evacuate and submerged about 468 homes. Earlier in the month, floods in Luwu Utara, South Sulawesi, affected more than 13,000 residents, with dozens still displaced.

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) issued separate warnings for additional water‑related threats. A coastal “rob” flood alert was issued for parts of East Java, covering Surabaya to Banyuwangi, advising residents to prepare for tidal surges between May 31 and June 3. At the same time, BMKG warned that high sea waves up to four metres could develop in several seas—including the North Natuna Sea, the northern Malacca Strait and the Indian Ocean west of Aceh—from May 30 to June 2, urging fishermen and vessel operators to observe safety limits.

Authorities continue to provide emergency logistics and shelter for flood‑affected communities while monitoring weather developments to mitigate further impacts.
