Indonesia issues widespread weather warnings as high seas and heavy rain affect multiple regions

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has issued several alerts for the week of 29 June – 2 July 2026. In Bengkulu province, wave heights of 2.5‑4 m are forecast, with accompanying wind speeds that could endanger fishing vessels and ferries. Similar high‑wave conditions are expected across other Indonesian waters, including the southern Indian Ocean and parts of the Pacific.

BMKG also warned of heavy to very heavy rain in parts of Sumatra Barat, Riau, West Kalimantan, South Sulawesi and other major cities, with the risk of thunderstorms and strong winds. Jakarta is expected to experience cloudy skies with light rain in the afternoon, while the capital’s air‑quality index reached 159, prompting health advisories to limit outdoor activity.

Additionally, the agency noted that the El Niño phenomenon has intensified to a “strong” level, raising the likelihood of drier conditions in Indonesia and surrounding regions through mid‑2026. Authorities urged the public, especially fishermen and coastal communities, to monitor updates and take precautionary measures.
