Indonesia expands mangrove restoration on World Mangrove Day
Across Indonesia, a coordinated push marked World Mangrove Day on 26 July 2026, with banks, ministries, universities and local governments planting tens of thousands of mangrove seedlings. PT Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) reported having planted 258,000 mangrove seedlings over the past eight years, while PT Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM) pledged to plant a total of 196,700 trees at 58 sites between 2024 and 2026. PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia (BRI) Peduli planted 24,000 mangroves in Karawang, and the DKI Jakarta administration sowed 24,310 seedlings at five coastal sites in the capital. University Telogorejo in Semarang planted 1,000 mangroves and distributed fish seedlings. PT Aviasi Pariwisata Indonesia (InJourney) added 20,000 seedlings, including 4,500 in the Mandalika tourism zone. Regional events in Bali, West Java, Riau and other provinces involved local officials, police, military and community groups. Ministers of Marine Affairs and Fisheries and of Forestry highlighted that Indonesia loses about 52 000 hectares of mangrove each year, with a 40 % decline over three decades, and noted a recovery of 91 678 hectares by the end of 2025 with a target to rehabilitate more than 17 000 hectares in 2026. The initiatives aim to protect coastlines, support fisheries livelihoods and capture carbon, positioning mangrove restoration as a pillar of the country’s green economy.
