Indonesia's BNPB Reports Surge in Forest Fires and Drought

The National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded a sharp increase in emergencies across Indonesia. In a 24‑hour period it logged 34 disaster events, of which 31 had significant impact, and a separate tally later showed 42 incidents, with 36 deemed significant. Forest and land fires (karhutla) and severe drought were the dominant hazards, reflecting the peak of the dry season.

Fires burned several hectares in Sulawesi Selatan’s Luwu Timur and in Papua Barat Daya’s Sorong area, while drought conditions affected thousands of households in Gorontalo and Bone Bolango, prompting the distribution of tens of thousands of litres of clean water. BNPB spokesperson Abdul Muhari noted that the fires were exacerbated by hot, windy weather and that combined response teams succeeded in extinguishing the blazes without loss of life.
