Indonesia's BRIN chief urges open science while protecting data sovereignty

Arif Satria, head of the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), highlighted the importance of open science at the Open Indonesia 2026 conference in Jakarta. He argued that openness accelerates innovation and informs policy, but stressed that robust data‑governance and FAIR principles are needed to safeguard national data sovereignty and intellectual assets. Satria also promoted citizen‑science initiatives and the development of open‑access repositories, metadata standards, and digital infrastructure to enable broader use of research outcomes.

In parallel, the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Culture and Universitas Terbuka reaffirmed President Prabowo Subianto's vision of innovation, emphasizing technology literacy across all education levels. The university showcased AI‑based exam monitoring and flexible online assessments to improve academic integrity and expand access. Both initiatives aim to build a knowledge‑driven economy by integrating open research, digital tools, and human‑centered development.
