Indonesia's Environment Ministry pushes climate action in Papua and waste roadmap for West Sumatra

The Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLH) urged Papua's local governments to accelerate the implementation of climate‑change mitigation policies and the use of Carbon Economic Value (NEK). Director Irawan Asaad said, "Success of the policy depends on the active role of local governments," highlighting Papua’s forests, mangroves and biodiversity as key carbon sinks and noting rising extreme weather, sea‑level threats and ecosystem pressure.

KLH and regional authorities also drafted a strategic roadmap to resolve the waste‑management crisis from source to final disposal by the end of 2027 in West Sumatra. Minister Moh Jumhur Hidayat stressed the need for cross‑government collaboration, stating, "By the end of 2027 the waste issue must be fully resolved." The plan includes source‑reduction, strengthening bank‑sampah, upgrading processing technology and ensuring all final‑disposal sites meet strict environmental standards. Governor Mahyeldi Ansharullah welcomed the initiative, while local official John Kenedy Azis reported daily waste generation of about 299 tons and highlighted shortages of trucks and excavators that hinder progress.
