Indonesia's Garuda Bridge Program Links Millions in Rural Areas

The Garuda Bridge program, launched by President Prabowo Subianto, targets isolated communities across Indonesia. By 28 July 2026 the initiative had completed 1,416 of its 2,838 planned bridges in 38 provinces, reaching 49.9% of the target. The bridges have connected 7,371 villages and benefitted about 4.25 million people, improving access to 8,505 schools, 4,250 health facilities and 4,360 economic sites.

In Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta, nine Garuda bridges have been built out of an intended eleven for 2026. The first three, finished earlier in the year, are located in Kapanewon Nglipar and Kapanewon Wonosari. Six additional bridges—four hanging pioneer bridges and two concrete structures—were added in Kapanewon Semin, Nglipar and Ponjong. Local officials and the Indonesian Army’s task force oversee construction, with Deputy for Partnerships and Media Kurnia Ramadhana confirming presidential support.
