Indonesia's High Court upholds 15‑year sentence and $13.4 trillion restitution for Kerry Riza

The Jakarta High Court (Pengadilan Tinggi Jakarta) affirmed a 15‑year imprisonment for Muhamad Kerry Adrianto Riza, the son of businessman Riza Chalid, in a large‑scale corruption case involving oil‑field contracts and coal procurement for state‑owned PT PLN. The court also ordered him to pay a total restitution of Rp13.4 trillion (approximately US$ $850 million), consisting of Rp2.9 trillion for direct financial loss and Rp10.5 trillion for broader economic damage. In addition, a fine of Rp500 million was imposed, replaceable by 190 days of detention. The decision is not yet final (inkracht) as the defendant and his counsel have been given time to respond. Prosecutors had originally sought an 18‑year sentence and higher penalties, but the appeal court reduced the prison term while significantly increasing the monetary compensation.
