Indonesia advances AI integration across higher education
Indonesia is accelerating the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into its higher‑education system. Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Fauzan called on universities to adopt adaptive governance to keep pace with AI, demographic shifts and future labour needs. Islamic universities highlighted the need to blend AI tools with Islamic values, noting that technology cannot replace human wisdom.
Education Minister Abdul Mu’ti stressed that teachers remain essential and that AI must be used to support, not replace, critical thinking. An AI Development Center is slated for the Kura‑Kura Bali Special Economic Zone, with partnerships including Tsinghua University, to position Bali as a hub for AI research and learning. Indonesia and Singapore have renewed their education MoU, focusing on AI‑enhanced learning to serve more than 50 million Indonesian students and narrow regional gaps through distance learning. University of Jember rector Iwan Taruna addressed graduates, describing AI as a useful assistant while reaffirming the irreplaceable role of wisdom, empathy and responsibility.
