Indonesia's Makan Bergizi Gratis program faces implementation scrutiny

Indonesia’s Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program is facing scrutiny regarding its implementation, economic impact, and budget. While the program aims to improve child nutrition and prevent stunting, officials and analysts have raised concerns about food safety, potential price manipulation in food procurement, and instances of food poisoning.

Economically, the program has significantly boosted the accommodation, food, and beverage sectors, largely through MSMEs. However, analysts note that it has yet to provide a substantial stimulus to the primary drivers of the national economy, such as the manufacturing, agriculture, and trade sectors.

Regarding fiscal planning, the National Nutrition Agency (Badan Gizi Nasional) is projected to receive a budget of Rp240.2 trillion in the 2027 draft state budget (RAPBN), which remains the highest among government agencies despite a decrease from the Rp268 trillion allocated for 2026. Political observers emphasize the need for strict anti-corruption measures and the implementation of asset seizure laws to protect the program's massive budget from misuse.
