Indonesia Constitutional Court orders MBG budget split from education funds
On 30 July 2026 the Constitutional Court (Mahkamah Konstitusi) issued Decision No 40/PUU‑XXIV/2026, ruling that the free nutritious‑meal program (Makan Bergizi Gratis, MBG) is not a primary component of education and must be excluded from the education budget in future state budgets. The court gave a transition period of up to two years, requiring a separate MBG line by the 2028 APBN at the latest.
The government said it respects the ruling and will study implementation together with the DPR. JPPI’s coordinator Ubaid Matraji welcomed the decision but urged the split be applied from the 2027 APBN. Various officials, including Coordinating Food Affairs Minister Zulkifli Hasan and State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi, echoed the need to adjust financing.
Operationally, Badan Gizi Nasional (BGN) permanently closed 833 MBG kitchens nationwide, while no kitchens in Kepahiang were affected. In Yogyakarta 17 SPPG were temporarily suspended for lacking permits and hygiene standards. The government plans to open new SPPG sites in high‑stunting areas—Papua, Papua Pegunungan and Nusa Tenggara Timur—within a month, targeting the addition of over 13 000 kitchens in 3T (remote, frontier, underserved) regions. Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin warned that about 112 million Indonesians still suffer from nutrition deficiency, underscoring the program’s importance.
