Indonesia's MBG program trials face safety and logistics scrutiny

Various regions in Indonesia are conducting trials and implementing the Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) free nutritious meal program, highlighting both operational successes and logistical concerns.

In Yogyakarta, the DPRD DIY has raised concerns regarding the buffet-style trial in Sleman and Kulonprogo. Officials emphasized that changing the serving method does not automatically guarantee food safety. They noted that the time gap between cooking in separate kitchens and delivery poses bacterial risks, and stressed the need for high-quality water to prevent contamination like E. coli.

In Sleman, the buffet system is being used as an educational tool. Students at SDN Soprayan are involved in portioning their own meals to learn discipline, hygiene, and nutritional responsibility while helping to reduce food waste.

In West Bandung, the SPPG HIPMI Karyawangi is utilizing certified chefs and nutritionists to balance taste with nutritional standards, while actively incorporating student feedback into menu planning. Meanwhile, in Bangka, the Dindikpora confirmed that meal distribution meets safety standards through quality testing. However, officials noted that current facilities are insufficient to reach all schools, suggesting that more kitchens are needed to meet the target coverage.
