Indonesia's Merapi and Semeru volcanoes erupt, spewing ash and pyroclastic clouds

Mount Merapi emitted a hot pyroclastic cloud that traveled about 2,000 m toward the southwest at 08:59 WIB on 9 June 2026. The event, recorded with a maximum amplitude of 26.96 mm lasting 136.83 seconds, is part of the ongoing effusive activity at the volcano. Authorities urged residents to stay away from hazard zones, avoid river valleys originating from the summit, and follow official recommendations.

On 10 June 2026, Mount Semeru in East Java erupted at 05:35 WIB, producing an ash column reaching roughly 1,200 m above the summit (about 4,876 m above sea level). The ash plume, described as white to grey with moderate intensity, drifted northward. Officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the volcanology agency reported the eruption and reminded communities to remain vigilant.
