Indonesia's Merapi and Semeru volcanoes stay on alert
The Indonesian volcano Merapi remains highly active, with the BPPTKG reporting continued effusive eruptions and frequent ash emissions from 20 to 200 metres high during 5‑11 June 2026. Monitoring recorded dozens of volcanic earthquakes, lava flows, and four hot‑cloud avalanches reaching up to 2,500 metres downstream, prompting authorities to keep the volcano at alert level 3 (Siaga). No damage to nearby communities has been reported so far.
Similarly, the volcano Semeru is also at alert level 3. The BPBD of Lumajang regency warned residents to stay vigilant for possible hot‑cloud avalanches after recent activity on 13 June. While volcanic quakes continue, there have been no reported impacts on settlements. Officials emphasized the importance of following official guidance and maintaining preparedness.
