Indonesia's Minister AHY outlines water resilience and El Niño preparedness plans
Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) said the government is strengthening national water resilience ahead of an anticipated El Niño that could coincide with the dry season. Strategies discussed include seawater desalination for island areas, brackish‑water treatment, and expanded use of dams and reservoirs to secure clean‑water supply and irrigation. Risk mapping by the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) will identify zones needing heightened monitoring, while measures are also being prepared for potential forest fires and land‑degradation caused by extreme weather.
President Prabowo Subianto directed ministries, agencies and local governments to boost readiness so El Niño does not disrupt water, food or economic stability. The water‑balance assessment remains in a safe category, and national food stocks are reported as adequate. AHY also emphasized that regional development must align with national goals, promoting integrated polisentri agglomerations, improved connectivity via hubs such as Patimban Port and Kertajati Airport, and the “Kawasan Kunci Bersama” model covering ten districts in eastern West Java and bordering Central Java.
