Indonesia's Nahdlatul Ulama prepares for 35th Muktamar, urges capable leadership
The 35th Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) congress, Muktamar ke‑35, is scheduled for 27–31 August 2026 at Pondok Pesantren Tambak Beras in Jombang, Indonesia. Professor Hanief Saha Ghafur, former UI professor and ex‑chair of PBNU, called on the gathering to elect a PBNU leader who has a proven record and concrete, measurable programs, urging candidates to disclose their vision, targets and performance indicators to the public.
KH Faris Fuad Hasyim (Gus Faris), head of the Nadwatul Ummah pesantren, warned that recent internal conflicts between Rais Aam KH Miftachul Akhyar and PBNU chair KH Yahya Cholil Staquf stem from an overly structural management approach, noting that mutual dismissals of senior officials are unprecedented in NU history.
Hanief also stressed the need to strengthen the Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi (AHWA) body so that the selection of NU’s top leadership becomes a rigorous, criteria‑based process rather than a simple election.
