Indonesia implements Free Nutritious Meal program updates

Indonesia is advancing its Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program through various operational and strategic initiatives. The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is testing a buffet-style serving model in Jakarta to reduce food waste and allow students to request additional portions if needed. This trial aims to eventually expand to 5,000 nutrition service units by the end of 2026.

To support the program's food supply, the National Food Agency (Bapanas) is strengthening food balance data and cross-sector coordination. Current national projections show a surplus in rice, chicken meat, and eggs, which provides a foundation for planning regional distribution. In Serdang Bedagai, local prosecutors are coordinating with nutrition service managers to ensure transparency and prevent corruption.

However, the program faces legal challenges. The Attorney General's Office is investigating alleged corruption within the National Nutrition Agency, with former head Dadan Hindayana named as a suspect. Legal experts suggest the investigation could expand to cover the entire procurement chain following reports of potential state losses reaching Rp10 trillion.
