Badan Gizi Nasional tightens Makan Bergizi Gratis safety protocols
The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) is implementing several measures to address operational issues and safety concerns in the Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program. BGN head Sudaryono reported the discovery of 6 million duplicate beneficiary data entries, primarily involving students registered in both the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education databases.
To improve food safety and prevent poisoning, BGN will mandate that all MBG meal containers include a visible consumption time limit starting next week. Because the meals are prepared fresh without preservatives, they must be consumed within four hours of cooking. Additionally, students are strictly advised not to take meals home to mitigate contamination risks. To enhance oversight, BGN officials have been assigned regional responsibilities at the provincial and regency levels to better coordinate with local health departments.
Health protocols for kitchen staff are also being tightened. BGN will provide free daily health screenings for kitchen volunteers and requires workers to undergo temperature and symptom checks to prevent foodborne illnesses. Meanwhile, the agency is addressing sanitation concerns, noting that approximately 950 kitchens have not yet met required hygiene standards, with threats of permanent closure for those failing assessments.
