Indonesia's IKN pushes UMKM growth, tourism and MICE development

Deputy Chairman of DPR Commission VII Rahayu Saraswati Djojohadikusumo visited the new capital region, IKN, on 10 July 2026. She highlighted the need to integrate local micro‑, small‑ and medium‑enterprises (UMKM) into the city’s economy, noting high domestic content in procurement and programmes to train local culinary entrepreneurs and other small‑business owners.

IKN’s authorities, led by Basuki Hadimuljono, are also positioning the site as a tourism and MICE hub. New toll‑road connections and planned hotels aim to attract both domestic and international visitors. The development plan includes a conservation area for endemic wildlife, alongside modern architecture that reflects Indonesia’s identity, to broaden the capital’s appeal beyond governmental functions.

These initiatives are intended to make IKN a catalyst for regional growth in East Kalimantan, supporting local SMEs while establishing the city as a future centre for meetings, conferences and tourism.
