Indonesia BGN suspends Semarang free‑meal kitchen after 707 cases
The Indonesian National Nutrition Agency (BGN) halted operations of the free‑meal kitchen (SPPG) in Semarang after 707 individuals – 693 students and 14 teachers – were suspected of food poisoning following consumption of the Makan Bergizi Gratis (MBG) program meals. BGN head Sudaryono visited the affected hospitals, ordered a temporary suspension of the kitchen, and launched an investigation focusing on possible premature cooking and suspect ingredients such as cassava leaves and rendang seasoning.
In parallel, BGN disclosed that 414 SPPG units across the country showed financial anomalies, with money deposited into accounts while the kitchens were not operational. The agency reported these irregularities to the Attorney General for possible criminal investigation, returned Rp311.2 billion to the state treasury, and pledged to continue inspecting other SPPG accounts. A digital monitoring system is being prepared to track all stages of food production for the MBG program.
