Indonesia sees higher onion, chili and chicken prices as live‑bird rates fall

Bank Indonesia’s Pusat Informasi Harga Pangan Strategis (PIHPS) released data on 28 June 2026 showing a sharp rise in several staple food prices. Onion (bawang merah) was priced at Rp 50,950 per kilogram, while garlic stood at Rp 43,600. All chili varieties remained costly, with red chilies ranging from Rp 53,100 to Rp 69,750 per kilogram. Fresh chicken meat (daging ayam) increased to Rp 37,200 per kilogram, up Rp 50, and beef prices stayed above Rp 140,000 per kilogram. Rice, sugar, and cooking oil prices were also listed at their current levels.

At the same time, live broiler chicken prices fell dramatically to Rp 13,000‑15,000 per kilogram, below farmers’ production costs of Rp 22,000‑23,000. Poultry growers warned of losses, prompting the Ministry of Agriculture to intervene. Officials announced measures such as encouraging the absorption of live‑bird stock, subsidising corn feed for growers, and monitoring supply‑demand balance to stabilise the sector.

Egg producers in Pacitan reported a drop in farm‑gate egg prices to about Rp 20,000 per kilogram because of an oversupply from neighbouring districts, further squeezing farmer margins as feed costs rise. The government’s response includes feed subsidies and calls for coordinated data collection to guide policy.
