PDIP declares balancing role, not opposition, to Prabowo government

Chair of the Democratic Party of Indonesia (PDIP) Central Board, Said Abdullah, announced that the party will serve as a "penyeimbang" (balancing) force for President Prabowo Subianto’s administration rather than joining the opposition or the governing coalition. The stance, adopted at the party’s National Working Meeting (Rakernas), means PDIP will back policies it judges to benefit the people and issue constructive criticism when policies fall short. Said emphasized that Indonesia’s political system differs from Western models of opposition and cited party leader Megawati Soekarnoputri’s directive for an objective, proportional approach.

He added that President Prabowo thanked PDIP for being an “honest friend” and welcomed the party’s role in ensuring quality governance through the 2029 term. The clarification came after PKB’s Jazilul Fawaid urged PDIP to declare a clear position, and it has sparked commentary from other parties, including Nasdem and Golkar, which view the debate as typical of a party outside the governing bloc.

Overall, PDIP seeks to monitor and support the government’s agenda while maintaining the freedom to critique, positioning itself as a constructive middle ground in Indonesia’s parliamentary landscape.
