Indonesia Set to Launch Biodiesel B50 Fuel on July 9, 2026

Indonesia will mandate a 50 percent biodiesel blend (B50) in diesel fuel beginning 1 July 2026, with full compliance required for all distributors by 1 October 2026. President Prabowo Subianto is slated to officiate the launch on 9 July 2026.

The policy is intended to cut diesel imports, ease pressure on the rupiah and improve the trade balance, and to advance the country’s renewable‑energy and net‑zero targets. Funding for the program is provided through the Palm Oil Fund Management Agency (BPDPKS).

Member of parliament Ateng Sutisna (Commission XII) has urged the government to disclose the full economic calculations behind B50, including fiscal support, storage and distribution costs, and to ensure infrastructure readiness. Economists such as Josua Pardede (Permata Bank) say the scheme could generate significant foreign‑exchange savings if governance is sound, but warn that soaring crude‑palm‑oil prices could raise costs and affect food‑oil supplies.

Technical officials note that the higher fatty‑acid‑methyl‑ester content may accelerate wear on rubber components, filters and high‑pressure pumps in older diesel engines. Automotive experts, however, stress that routine maintenance similar to that for B40 should suffice, provided owners monitor fuel filters, seals and injection systems.

Overall, the B50 rollout reflects Indonesia’s broader energy‑transition strategy, linking fuel policy with fiscal, agricultural and environmental considerations.
