Indonesia's Traffic Police Deploy Face‑Recognition ETLE System

The Indonesian Traffic Police (Korlantas Polri) has upgraded its Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system with facial‑recognition technology. The new system can identify drivers even when vehicle plates are falsified, covered, or missing, linking captured images to population data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil). Between January and July 2026, the previous ETLE recorded 16,812 violations related to license‑plate issues, with 77.24 % involving motorcycles. The facial‑recognition upgrade aims to curb attempts to evade electronic enforcement, improve the accuracy of violation notices, and assist in criminal investigations on the road.

The rollout follows a directive to strengthen traffic‑law compliance and reduce evasion tactics such as using fake plates or hiding number plates. Korlantas officials, including Brigadier General I Made Agus Prasatya, emphasized that the technology will ensure that penalties are correctly assigned to the responsible drivers.
