The Indonesian Traffic Police (Korlantas Polri) has upgraded its Electronic Traffic Law Enforcement (ETLE) system by integrating facial-recognition technology. This upgrade allows authorities to identify drivers even when vehicle license plates are missing, covered, or falsified. The system functions by linking captured images to population data from the Directorate General of Population and Civil Registration (Dukcapil).

The implementation follows data from the first half of 2026, which recorded 16,812 violations related to license-plate issues, with motorcycles accounting for 77.24% of those cases. Officials stated the technology is intended to curb evasion tactics, improve the accuracy of violation notices, and assist in criminal investigations on the road.
