Indonesia's Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi unveils $1.5 trillion holiday travel discount program
The Indonesian government has allocated Rp 1.54 trillion to subsidise transport fares during the 2026‑27 school holidays and the Christmas‑New Year period. Discounts of 30 % will apply to train tickets, ferry fares and port service charges, while a 100 % VAT exemption is granted for domestic economy‑class airline tickets. Individual budget lines total Rp 190.5 billion for school‑holiday rail discounts, Rp 161.4 billion for the year‑end rail discounts, and Rp 722 billion for the VAT exemption on flights, with targets of several million passengers for each phase.
In parallel, Transport Minister Dudy Purwagandhi said the KRL commuter‑rail operating hours will be extended for major events, citing the recent inauguration of the JIS station and prior extensions for large gatherings such as the Java Jazz festival. Service currently runs until around 21:30 WIB and may be lengthened further to accommodate event‑related passenger flows.
