Indonesia's Ministry of Transportation audits KMP Mutiara Sentosa II safety after deadly fire
The Indonesian Ministry of Transportation (Kemenhub) has ordered a comprehensive audit of the Safety Management System used by PT Atosim Lampung Pelayaran, the operator of the passenger vessel KMP Mutiara Sentosa II. The audit follows a fire that broke out on 2 August 2026 in the waters off Sumenep, East Java, killing five people and prompting the evacuation of 238 passengers, of whom 233 survived.
The Ministry deployed several state vessels—including the patrol ship KN Grantin P.211 and the navigation ship KN Masalembo—to assist in the rescue and evacuation. The National Transportation Safety Committee (KNKT) is conducting the official investigation, with support from the ministry. Member of Parliament Bambang Haryo Soekartono visited victims, praised the emergency response, and called for stronger national maritime safety standards.
