Indonesia’s UI and UGM researchers present AI climate work at Tokyo conference

Indonesia’s leading universities, the University of Indonesia (UI) and Gadjah Mada University (UGM), joined the Weathernews Weather & Climate Forecast Conference (WCFC) in Tokyo on 17 June 2026. Organized by Weathernews International with the BxBunka Foundation, the forum focused on artificial‑intelligence applications for early‑warning systems and climate resilience across Asia.

UI team leader Prof. Jatna Supriatna highlighted the group’s study on the 2025 Senyar cyclone’s flooding and landslides in Sumatra, noting threats to the critically endangered Tapanuli orangutan. UGM researchers presented machine‑learning and Explainable AI methods to forecast hydrometeorological disaster risks in Yogyakarta, while UI’s Eko Waludi discussed AI’s role in improving national energy efficiency and supporting Indonesia’s net‑zero target. The Indonesian delegation, including the BMKG, also outlined a roadmap for regional early‑warning cooperation, positioning Indonesia as a strategic partner in Asian climate‑tech collaboration.
