Industrial fires reported at French compost facility and sawmill
Two separate industrial fires occurred at commercial facilities in France.
In Branges, an organic waste recovery site operated by Biovalis experienced a fire in one of its eight compost storage units. Approximately forty firefighters responded to the scene, using hoses and a large ladder to prevent the flames from spreading to adjacent storage cells. To assist in extinguishing the fire and preventing reignition, the operator used a backhoe to spread the affected compost in an outdoor courtyard, allowing firefighters to apply specialized foam. No injuries were reported as the facility was closed at the time. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by gendarmes.
In Val de Briey, a fire broke out at the Briey Bois sawmill during the night of August 22 to August 23. Five rescue centers were mobilized to combat the blaze. While firefighters successfully prevented the fire from spreading to the rest of the sawmill, the facility suffered significant economic damage, including the destruction of an expensive delimiting machine and damage to the roof. Security guards from neighboring businesses raised the alarm. No injuries were reported.
