Industrial waste facility fires erupt in Italy amid air‑quality worries

On July 11 and 12, 2026, two separate fires broke out at waste‑management facilities in Italy. A blaze at the REMAT Lazio plant in San Giorgio a Liri involved plastic material, prompting intervention by fire crews, Carabinieri, and environmental experts from ARPA Lazio. No injuries were reported, but authorities are monitoring potential air‑quality impacts.

A second fire struck the Polirecuperi recycling company in the industrial zone of Cornaredo, near Milan, affecting about 2,000 sqm of the site. Six fire‑brigade units from nearby stations contained the flames, and the area was subsequently secured and decontaminated. Residents were advised to keep windows closed as a precaution. Both incidents remain under investigation, with causes not yet determined, and are part of a recent spate of industrial fires in the region.
