IndyCar Freedom 250 Grand Prix to debut on Washington, D.C. streets

The NTT IndyCar Series will host the inaugural Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington, D.C., on August 23, 2026. The event, part of celebrations for America's 250th anniversary, features a 1.7-mile temporary street circuit winding through the National Mall, past the U.S. Capitol, and along Pennsylvania Avenue.

President Donald Trump is expected to participate in a ceremonial lap of honor in the presidential motorcade, potentially using the armored limousine known as ‘the Beast,’ before the race begins. The event is expected to draw up to 140,000 spectators daily, necessitating heavy security measures including TSA-style checkpoints and significant police presence.

FOX Sports will provide extensive live coverage, utilizing 90 cameras and new technologies like ‘Owl Cam’ and ‘landmark pointers’ to showcase the historic backdrop. The race could have major championship implications, as driver Alex Palou may secure his fifth IndyCar title depending on the results of the 250-mile contest.
