International Race of Champions revival
Overview
The International Race of Champions (IROC) revival, announced in late June 2026 by former NASCAR crew chief Ray Evernham and former Speed Street promoter Rob Kauffman, will feature two exhibition events in August 2026. The series’ classic Pontiac Firebirds will compete on a 1.7‑mile street circuit around Washington, D.C.’s National Mall during the Freedom 250 Grand Prix weekend (August 22‑23) and at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca during the 2026 Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (August 12‑15). The driver roster includes veterans from NASCAR, IndyCar and sports‑car racing such as Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, Bobby Labonte, Rusty Wallace, Bill Elliott, Tony Kanaan, Helio Castroneves and Dario Franchitti.
On July 13, President Donald J. Trump and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced at the White House that the Freedom 250 Grand Prix will host its first IndyCar race on a temporary 1.66‑mile circuit winding the National Mall and Pennsylvania Avenue. The two‑day event, scheduled for August 22‑23, will showcase drivers David Malukas, series champion Alex Palou and Indy 500 winner Felix Rosenqvist, with Team Penske’s Roger Penske noting over 80 coordination meetings in 90 days to secure the race amid “partisan obstacles.” Organizers expect up to 100,000 spectators each day and have received more than 250,000 registration requests for the free event.
The IndyCar weekend dovetails with the IROC exhibition, which will run on the same street circuit and be followed by the IndyCar race, integrating the historic series into the nation’s 250th‑anniversary celebrations and a high‑profile motorsport weekend in the capital.
