INE adopts gray as primary color to reinforce neutrality

The Instituto Nacional Electoral (INE) has approved a new modification to its Institutional Identity Manual, transitioning its primary color to various shades of gray. This decision follows a rapid series of visual changes; the institute had previously replaced its traditional 'rosa mexicano' with lilac tones on September 9, only to face criticism regarding similarities to colors used by the Mexico City government and other political actors.

The new palette, which includes gray, beige, white, and black, is intended to visually reinforce the principles of neutrality and impartiality required of the electoral referee. The change is mandatory for all INE offices and institutional communications nationwide and is set to take effect on September 25.

During the approval process, the head of the Internal Control Body, Víctor Hugo Carvente Contreras, raised concerns regarding the urgency of the extraordinary session and the potential budgetary impact of the change. He questioned whether the transition aligns with principles of austerity and efficiency, noting that the specific costs of replacing institutional goods and materials have not been fully detailed.
